As we learn more about the environment, we become more aware of the ways we abuse it. Thousands of people are working hard to reverse the harmful changes we have made to our planet. The more we care for our environment the more secure our future is. Caring for the environment is very important because we depend so heavily on the environment and the organisms in it for our own survival. Imagine what life our be like if cotton when extinct or if cows went extinct. How different would our lives be today if that were to happen? By not caring for our environment in the manner it should be cared for we risk the way of life that we have become all too accustomed to.
Why do we need a healthy environment? Well...how about the general health of the earth's population? What about YOUR health? A poorly maintained environment has been proven to cause negative health effects on the human body. Cancer...asthma...the list could go on! Have you ever gone on a vacation over the summer? Ever gone to the mountains? Ever gone hunting and been out in the REAL outdoors away from civilization and just taken a deep breath and say...wow...its such fresh air! See, THAT is what our environment should be like! Clean and fresh! That addresses the problems of air pollution...but what about OTHER types of pollution? Have you ever driven past a dump? It STINKS! Ever throw something out the window of your car as your cruising down the highway (all the while putting smog in the air)? Our society is such a consumer oriented society! And we want things FAST! Everything is processed, prepackaged, consumed and then all the extra packaging gets thrown away...either out the window or to the dump! Sure, some of our trash doesn't got to the dump, but rather an a trash incinerator to get burned for making electricity! What a novel idea...but guess what, instead of going to the dump, it get puffed up into the sky! Is that any better? I'll let you make that judgement call!
You see, its not just about finding good ways to get rid of our trash and wastes...because they have to go SOMEWHERE! For example, we try to offset the rapidly inflating gas prices with ethanol? What kind of joke is this? We're burning energy to make energy...to keep burning and polluting our beautiful blue...(or, what USED TO BE blue) skies. What we ultimately need to do is CONSUME LESS! First off, it would save our personal resources...our money...secondly, it would save our other resources like oil or coal...and it would make a whole lot less air pollution! There's three possible positive effects from ONE sacrifice!
